Youth Spotlight
Henrique Rocha Mendes, 21
Batuque Art - Drums of Brazil Project
Every weekend, Henry and his music-loving friends wou
ld hang out as his house. Lacking money to buy instruments, they would drum on pots, pans, and buckets in Henry's backyard. The rhythm and music from the drums attracted children from all around the neighborhood who watched and worshipped the group through Henry's back gate. Seeing their longing and enthusiasm, Henry decided that all members of his community needed an alternative way to access art.

In 2008, he submitted a proposal for dance and percussion workshops at CEU Alvarenga, a public educational and cultural center in São Paulo. To his great delight, the proposal was accepted, so Henry, along with his friends, started the "Batuque Art - Drums of Brazil" project to engage young residents of the Pedreira community in southern São Paulo in cultural activities.

Through the volunteer-led project, more than 100 children and teenagers benefit from percussion, singing, and folk-dancing workshops that blend traditional rhythms, dances, and songs from Brazil and Africa with modern day sounds and rhythms rooted in the local community.
